We all have them — songs that touch a secret place deep in your soul — sometimes secret even from you. They can grow and occasionally fester in you like an open wound, or they can fill you up, inspire you, and occasionally even heal you.
Sometimes they don’t even reflect your musical tastes. They can be shameful secrets that you keep from family and friends. You feel like a drug addict craving your next fix. At times like those you thank the powers that be for MP3 players — the syringe of those suffering with this affliction.
This is my fourth instalment of songs that touch my soul. This edition is full of the pain of lost love, the joy of new romance and, as always, passion, desire, and lust. This is a form of therapy, sharing with you my neuroticism, my secret inner lunacy. Welcome to my musical schizophrenia.
“Messiah” – MoZella
I worshipped him. Just like the song says. “I never thought that lovin’ you would hurt for so long. And I worshipped you, and I praised your name, and I lived for you like a Messiah.” But he didn’t see how special I was, he didn’t appreciate me the way — I finally realised — I deserved to be appreciated. We have all been through it. Now out the other side it seems so obvious, but when you’re there… you just don’t care, all you want is that person to love you, to adore you, to appreciate how special you really are deep down inside just like you appreciate all their special, quirky beauty.
“Strange and Beautiful” — Aqualung
A “friend” sent me this track. Hey, just because one guy didn’t appreciate how special and beautiful I am doesn’t mean they all won’t. I love this song. I love everything about this song. From the incredible head-turning lyrics — “I’ve been watching your world from afar… To me you’re strange and you’re beautiful. You’d be so perfect with me but you just can’t see, you turn every head but don’t see me” – to the hauntingly sexual synth feel music. Okay yes, maybe it is ever so slightly stalker-ish but sometimes a girl wants to know just how much you want her – not that I am condoning stalking in anyway.
“Taking Chances” – Platinum Weird
I would love to share this song with you but Dave Stewart and Interscope records have yet to release this album, choosing instead to release a make-believe album called Make Believe. “Taking Chances” is the second track from the soon-to-be-released eponymous album Platinum Weird. “Don’t know much about your life. Don’t know much about your world but I don’t want to be alone tonight… You don’t know about my past and I don’t have the future figured out. And maybe this is going too fast. And maybe it’s not meant to last. But what do you say to taking chances?” A fantastic track that talks to that part of me that would love to break free and jump feet first into love, a relationship, and possibly utter joy. If only I dared to take that chance.
“Deep Inside of You” – Third Eye Blind
Getting lost in a lover and trying to find your way out after they’ve gone. We all know this joy and pain. We all crave this joy and somehow we know that the pain will follow but we hope it won’t. Third Eye Blind encapsulates all of that perfectly in this beautiful, succinct classic pop tune.
“Wrap Your Arms Around Me” – Barenaked Ladies
This sweet, romantic song makes me long for a close, physical, and personal relationship. The harmonies and melodies in this softly sung song make my knees weak and my heart ache with longing. “I concede that you were right about this place. I can make a perfect likeness of your body if I trace. I can hold you until you turn out the light/ And I can’t see.” I admit I have never quite understood the lyrics and yet, it touches me deeply all the same.
“Like The Way She Moves” – Chris Isaak
“I was laying in bed trying to catch my breath. Half ashamed half smiling at the things we did. She made it clear from the start it was a one night stand. But I was thinking of ways to make her change her plan.” For anyone who knows and loves me, this song will not come as a surprise. Chris Isaak’s throaty, earthy vocals and the bluesy roots rock guitar accent the libidinous lyrics. This song is a delightfully lustful, sensuously naughty song that touches me in the centre of my carnal soul.
