"Music is the only sensual pleasure without vice." -- Samuel Johnson

Elusive inspiration. How do I find it when I need it? I haven’t learned that all too important skill of writing without inspiration. How do I get an idea regarding a specific subject? How do others go about generating ideas? These are the questions I have been wrestling with all day. I am trying to write a short story (3000 words or less) and the theme of this must be “work”. How lame is that. Work?! Where do I go with that? I have been racking my brain for an idea but so far I have very little.

What do you do when you have nothing, when a subject does nothing for you or to you? How do you create something from nothing? I would really like an answer to this question. How do you do it?

I find that when I sit at the computer for too long I just get distracted (as you may have guessed from my earlier writing). I just don’t seem to know what to do. I can’t keep it together, I’m just not focused. I need to stimulate my imagination at will.

Now let me focus - what does work mean to me? - pause for effect -

- Still paused (are you feeling the effect?) -

Nope, nothing. I’m afraid that I am of the “work-to-live” variety.

Ah well, back at it.
